Shaw Pad

Shaw Industries recently received the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital 2017 Proprietary Campaign of the Year award. The award from St. Jude recognizes a corporate partner who has implemented a successful proprietary campaign in addition to their primary means of support for the hospital. Shaw’s efforts around the cushion padding and carpet collections are some of the proprietary campaigns that inspired the hospital’s selection for the award.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital focuses on its mission: finding cures and saving children. Most of the funding for St. Jude comes from individual contributions, so St. Jude has the freedom to focus on what matters most – saving children.

The Beginning of The Sponsorship

In 2012, Shaw Carpet started as a single sponsorship of the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway, which has grown into a multi-channel partnership that reaches virtually every aspect of Shaw’s business. Here are some of the elements that Shaw’s partnership with St. Jude consists of:

  • Carpet padding from Shaw Industries that began with two styles and now has seven styles that benefit St. Jude.
  • Shaw is a gold level sponsor of the St. Jude Memphis Marathon Weekend where Shaw associates come together to fund-raise and run.
  • Shaw Carpet is a silver level sponsor of the St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer where Shaw retailers and associates across the country participate in the 62-city run/walk and fund-raise.

Shaw has donated over $6.4 million to St. Jude. The 2017 Proprietary Campaign of the Year Award is an embodiment of Shaw’s commitment to servant leadership and its corporate vision of creating a better future for customers and the communities it serves.

Shaw Industries Releases 2014 Sustainability Report

shaw

Recently, Shaw Industries released their 2014 Sustainability Report. Shaw shifted to the Global Reporting Initiative’s newest G4 standard converged with a notable increase in the demand for supply chain transparency surrounding product ingredients across the flooring industry. Shaw was prepared for the shift after designing for Cradle to Cradle Certified product standards. The company is continuing to develop innovative sustainability solutions to create a better future for its customers, associates, and communities.

“In the past 2 years, we have committed $540 million in capital investments to enhance our operations, including $350 million in expansions,” said Vance Bell, chairman and CEO, Shaw Industries. “These initiatives in infrastructure, equipment, advanced technology, and product development will get underway throughout 2015 and 2016, and result in 1,000 new jobs in the coming years – this is the kind of innovation that creates a more sustainable future.”

Shaw’s holistic approach to sustainability is that every material, every process, and every action is designed for a better future.

The new report outlines significant initiatives such as:

Product Stewardship
Shaw announced a more than $20 million investment in a new recycling facility in Ringgold, GA. This new facility is called Evergreen Ringgold, and it will be the first of its kind to recycle nylon as well as polyester carpet. This expansion to Shaw’s recycling capabilities builds upon the company’s efforts that have resulted in the collection and recycling of more than 800 million pounds of post-consumer carpet since 2006.

Material Use
Shaw takes the utmost care to ensure that the materials that go into its products are both safe and environmentally responsible. In 2014, 66 percent of the sales of Shaw manufactured products were Cradle to Cradle Certified Silver.

Branding and Marketing
Shaw is committed to communicating responsibly and regularly about its products and the company’s approach to sustainability. Through its commitment to Cradle to Cradle and numerous other sustainability standards and reporting tools, Shaw employs labels and certifications as credible evidence of the company’s commitment to transparency and third-party verification and to help facility product purchase decisions.

Talent Management
Shaw recognized the changing needs of its people and its business and identified key leadership characteristics that will be important in Shaw’s success moving forward. Shaw also began to establish more formal opportunities for its associates to support each other through affinity groups such as the Women’s Innovation Network (WiN) and ShawVET. These and other efforts resulted in Shaw being named number eight on the Forbes’ inaugural list of America’s Best Employers.

Soniclean Partners with Shaw to Create a Soft Carpet Vacuum

http://www.floorcoveringweekly.com/Uploads/Public/Images/shaw%20floors.pngSoniclean, which is a high-tech manufacturer of upright vacuum cleaners, is noted for its proprietary sonic cleaning technology. Soniclean recently announced the launch of its new Soft Carpet vacuum cleaner. The company partnered with Shaw Industries to address the growing demand for a vacuum cleaner that can successfully clean soft style carpeting.
Shaw’s Caress soft style carpets are some of the softest tufted nylon carpets today, and they have three times as many fibers per yarn than conventional carpets. Chris Yarbrough, the director of carpet technology and performance at Shaw, said that Soniclean worked with Shaw’s technical team to create a vacuum that uses a sonic bar that uses ultrasonic pulses to bring dirt particles to the surface of the carpet. The use of the ultrasonic pulses will make cleaning the soft carpets easier and safer for the carpet. In addition, the vacuum is designed to move easily across the super soft carpets.
The Soniclean Soft Carpet features a unique vent system, and it has large molded rubber wheels that allow the vacuum to “float” on the carpet. The vacuum also has a soft bristle brush roll, which provides a deep clean while preventing damage to the plush fibers in the soft carpet. When the vent system is closed, the vacuum cleaner is converted into a conventional vacuum cleaner, which also effectively cleans other types of carpeting and hard surface floors. The vacuum also has a patented sonic bar, which is located behind the brush roll. The sonic bar produces 200 sonic vibrations per second to dislodge and remove any embedded particulate from the carpet pile. The vacuum cleaner has a jam protection system that automatically turns off the power if there is a jam in the brush roll. The Soniclean Soft Carpet vacuum cleaner only weighs 10.5 lbs, which allows the vacuum to be taken throughout the house easily. At the end of July, the Soniclean Soft Vacuum Cleaner will be available for purchase through independent carpet and flooring dealers throughout the United States and Canada.
