“Cabin grade”or “tavern grade” wood is an excellent choice when purchasing new hardwood flooring. Cabin grade is basically the same wood as 1st quality, which means it is the same species, it is milled to the same specifications, and it is stained the same color. The only difference is that cabin grade wood was called or rejected from the 1st quality run for a variety of reasons.
The most common reasons are mineral streaks and knot holes, which can give the floor a more rustic look. Many customers prefer this rustic look to the color consistency in many 1st quality styles. There may also be more short boards in a box of cabin grade material. Most wood flooring is purchased in random lengths, and you will find more boards that are 9” to 18” in a box of cabin grade than you would in a typical 1st quality box. Other irregularities found in cabin grade may include missing tongues, over wood, or an uneven finish. In addition, certain manufacturers are known to have cleaner cabin grade wood than others, and they have a 5 year finish warranty on many of their cabin grade flooring.
Installing cabin grade wood is more challenging, and you should purchase 15% to 20% extra material to allow your installer to use only the most uniform boards from each box. Keep in mind that cabin-grade is engineered, and when you see “tavern-grade” it means it is solid hardwood.

Winter is a fun season when you’re outside making snowmen, sledding down a hill, or throwing snowballs at family and friends, but winter is never a fun time for the flooring in your home. During the winter, you track in a winter mix of snow, ice, salt, and mud indoors across your clean floors. If you do proper prevention and clean-up, then you can still enjoy winter without worrying that your flooring has been ruined.
Here are a few tips:
Place area mats at all entrances of the house to keep snow, ice, and mud at bay.
Make sure the mats have a rubber backing so the mud and moisture will not seep through the mat and into the carpet.
If you do get mud on the carpet, allow the mud to dry completely. After it has dried, shatter the mud with the handle of a knife, then vacuum as normal. Blot any dirt spots with a small amount of detergent solution (1/4 teaspoon detergent per 1 qt. of water) and a white paper towel to work the affected area. Continue applying detergent and blotting until the spot is removed. Rinse with tap water using a spray bottle and blot to remove excess moisture.
Place area mats at the entrances of the house.
Vacuum or sweep your hardwood floors with a soft-bristle broom every day during winter to prevent scratches from salt. Make sure you do this step before you use any cleaning products on the hardwood flooring.
Wipe up spots immediately with a cleaner, and make sure the cleaning solution is applied directly to a white cloth. Wipe the area clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth.
Another great way to prevent floor damage during the winter months, is to purchase carpet and hardwood flooring that are easy to clean and durable. Mohawk has great carpets that are easy to clean, and these are called their SmartStrand Forever Clean carpets. SmartStrand Forever Clean carpets are beautiful, durable, and very easy to clean. In addition, SmartStrand carpets are created for active families. We also have some new cabin-grade hardwood floors from Mohawk that will work well in any home if you take care of them well.

Do you have any tips for household care during the winter season? Let us know!
Using the color white during the winter or for a large part of your home, may seem a little much, but white is a beautiful color. Many modern designers use white for the flooring or the walls of the home. The color white gives your home a clean look, and there are so many color pairings and design patterns you can use with this color.
If you don’t want to paint the walls white or use white flooring, then you can always use the color for the furniture and accent pieces. A lovely white couch will become a great spotlight for any room. The best thing about using the color white in your home, is that this color will work well in any season.
If you do decide to go with white carpet for your home, then I suggest using some white carpet from Mohawk’s SmartStrand Forever Clean collection. For the fourth consecutive year, Mohawk Industries has been honored as the most sustainable flooring manufacturer in the Southeastern Corporate Sustainability Rankings’ annual assessment of the sustainable practices of the region’s largest businesses.
Mohawk employs a three-factor strategic approach to sustainability, focusing on the company’s processes, products, and people. Each year the company processes billions of pounds of recycled material into higher value streams. Six of the company’s 10 U.S. ceramic tile manufacturing facilities recover and reuse all of their process waste water. Twenty-four of the company’s carpet manufacturing plants have achieved an internal “Zero Waste” status. Across all flooring categories, hundreds of the company’s residential and commercial products contain recycled material. Mohawk also keeps making progress toward an aggressive 25 percent intensity reduction in energy consumption, greenhouse gases, water use, and landfill waste by the year of 2020.

SmartStrand has created the new SmartStrand Forever Clean to address consumers’ biggest issues with carpet, cleaning. SmartStrand Forever Clean has a proprietary system that promises greater clean-ability and it is specifically designed for the triexta fiber. SmartStrand Forever Clean was created because even though SmartStrand has always had built in protection, it did not always have the ease of cleaning that consumers desired. Therefore, the company created SmartStrand Forever Clean, which is said to be the easiest to clean carpet on the planet.
SmartStrand already has a permanent built-in stain and soil protection, and Forever Clean has a new layer called Nanoloc. The Nanoloc layer was designed specifically to make triexta easier to clean and maintain. Nanoloc will make the carpet three times easier to clean than other nylon and polyester carpet. The great part about Nanoloc is that the formula adheres to the fiber, but it allows flexibility so that the carpet will be soft to the touch. Basically, Nanoloc is an advanced spill-resistant shield made from nano-particles that seamlessly lock together, which prevents dirt and spills from settling into the carpet. SmartStrand Forever Clean releases soil at three times the rate of other carpets, and it shows a higher level of effectiveness with steam cleaning and from the standpoint of traffic. Forever Clean is not really about stain resistance, more so about the ease of removability of dirt.
To test the clean-ability of SmartStrand Forever Clean, Mohawk partnered with Tough Mudder to see how well the carpet stood up to being dirtied by more than 10,000 muddy contestants. Tough Mudder is a 10-12 mile obstacle course designed to test all-around strength, stamina, teamwork, and mental grit. As you can guess by the name, the contestants usually end up covered head to toe in mud from the different obstacles. Mohawk’s SmartStrand Forever Clean was placed at the end of the course for the finished contestants to walk on, and then it was cleaned. As you can see below, the carpet looks as if it was never covered in mud at all.
Here is a video to give you an idea of what a Tough Mudder race is like:

Last year, Mohawk traveled across the country with their “License to Spill” tour. They visited different food festivals in the most popular cities in the country. At every festival they allowed people to spill food on their SmartStrand carpet that has DuPont Sorona, which has built-in stain and soil resistance that will never wear or wash off. Chocolate, ketchup, mustard, fruit, and Powerade are only a few of the foods that put Mohawk’s SmartStrand with DuPont Sorona to the test. At every festival, the carpet cleaned well and it had no stains or discoloring.
After last year’s success, Mohawk is doing the “License to Spill” tour again this year. They have already visited some cities and food festivals, but there are a few more steps left on the tour.

At Carpet Express, when you enter our Market Street store, you will see a fun display for Mohawk’s Scotchgard Protector Advanced Repel Technology, which provides complete protection for your flooring. It is fun and ironic that Mohawk uses “Pig-Pen” from the Peanuts comic strip by Charles M. Schulz as the display. “Pig-Pen” attracts dirt, and he attracts dirt so much that when he is actually clean no one recognizes him.
If Scotchgard Protector can repel “Pig-Pen’s” mess then you have nothing to worry about in regards to every day messes. Scotchgard Protector Advanced Repel Technology protects hardwood floors from stains and spills, and it also reduces abrasive wear and soil buildup. Every carpet fiber and the carpet backing is also safe from stain and soil. Mohawk hardwood flooring, Wear-Dated carpet, EverStrand Carpet, and PermaStrand Carpet have the Scotchgard Protector Advanced Repel Technology.
