What is Bamboo Flooring?

bamboo-flooring_152

What is Bamboo?

Bamboo is a grass that is found all over the world, except in the North and South Poles. Bamboo has over 1200 species and there are many uses for bamboo. Bamboo is one of the most efficient plants at removing carbon from the atmosphere. It can be harvested and replenished with barely any impact to the environment. Bamboo can regenerate without having to be replanted, and it has a rapid growth cycle so it can be harvested in 5 to 6 years. Other trees take ten to a hundred years to develop so they can be harvested. In addition bamboo grown in temperate regions is better for flooring than bamboo grown in tropical regions. Bamboo from tropical regions is softer and less stable than bamboo grown in temperate regions.

Construction of Traditional Bamboo Flooring

  1. After the bamboo is harvested, the poles are dried in a commercial kiln.
  2. After the poles are dried, they are cut into strips.
  3. The strips are aligned and milled to a uniform size.
  4. The strips are then glued together to form a board that can be sanded and finished.

Construction of Strand Woven Bamboo Flooring

  1. After the bamboo is harvested, the poles are dried in a commercial kiln.
  2. After the poles are dried, they are cut into strips.
  3. Resin-dipped bamboo splits are loaded into an industrial press.
  4. The press uses 100,000 Metric tons of pressure to compress the strips into a solid log.
  5. The log is strand woven and it is more than twice as dense as traditional bamboo.
  6. After the log is conditioned for months, the log can now be cut into veneers. The veneers are then used to produce planks of flooring.

Horizontal Grain VS. Vertical Grain

IMG_5246

Bamboo floors that have a horizontal grain are known for having the classic bamboo look, and it features large darkened nodes throughout the floor’s surface. The individual slats of bamboo are put down horizontally and glued together, which is where the horizontal grain gets its name. The name does not refer to the direction the grain runs.

602HS

Bamboo floors that have a vertical grain do not have the classic, dark nodes that many people associate with bamboo. The individual slats of bamboo are put down vertically and glued together. Once again the name does not refer to the direction the grain runs.

Strand Woven

In Strand Woven bamboo there is no horizontal or vertical grain distinction. Strand woven bamboo has an organic grain look because strands of bamboo poles are compressed together under hundreds of tons of pressure. Strand woven bamboo is rated over 3,000 on the Janka Hardness Scale. This bamboo flooring is ideal for high traffic residential and light commercial settings.

Maintenance & Care

  • For regular maintenance, use a soft bristle broom to sweep the floors and a vacuum with a soft floor attachment if your bamboo floor has beveled edges.
  • Clean your floors periodically with a professional wood floor cleaner.
  • Wipe up spills immediately with a slightly damp towel.
  • Use throw rugs inside and outside doorways.
  • Use a humidifier during the winter months to keep bamboo movement and shrinkage to a minimum.
  • Do not wet-mop a bamboo floor.

Winter Care Flooring Tips

snowWinter is a fun season when you’re outside making snowmen, sledding down a hill, or throwing snowballs at family and friends, but winter is never a fun time for the flooring in your home. During the winter, you track in a winter mix of snow, ice, salt, and mud indoors across your clean floors. If you do proper prevention and clean-up, then you can still enjoy winter without worrying that your flooring has been ruined.

Here are a few tips:

Carpet:

  • Place area mats at all entrances of the house to keep snow, ice, and mud at bay.
  • Make sure the mats have a rubber backing so the mud and moisture will not seep through the mat and into the carpet.
  • Vacuum daily
  • If you do get mud on the carpet, allow the mud to dry completely. After it has dried, shatter the mud with the handle of a knife, then vacuum as normal. Blot any dirt spots with a small amount of detergent solution (1/4 teaspoon detergent per 1 qt. of water) and a white paper towel to work the affected area. Continue applying detergent and blotting until the spot is removed. Rinse with tap water using a spray bottle and blot to remove excess moisture.

Hardwood:

  • Place area mats at the entrances of the house.
  • Vacuum or sweep your hardwood floors with a soft-bristle broom every day during winter to prevent scratches from salt. Make sure you do this step before you use any cleaning products on the hardwood flooring.
  • Wipe up spots immediately with a cleaner, and make sure the cleaning solution is applied directly to a white cloth. Wipe the area clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth.

Another great way to prevent floor damage during the winter months, is to purchase carpet and hardwood flooring that are easy to clean and durable. Mohawk has great carpets that are easy to clean, and these are called their SmartStrand Forever Clean carpets. SmartStrand Forever Clean carpets are beautiful, durable, and very easy to clean. In addition, SmartStrand carpets are created for active families. We also have some new cabin-grade hardwood floors from Mohawk that will work well in any home if you take care of them well.

Mohawk Rises in the Ranking of Top Green Companies

Mohawk Industries’ commitment to sustainability has caught the attention of Newsweek. Newsweek recognized the company in the magazine’s fifth ranking of the 500 “greenest” U.S. companies. Mohawk has been the highest ranked flooring manufacturer during each year the rankings have been released.

The Newsweek rankings use key indicators to measure the environmental performance of large publicly-traded companies. These companies are delivering solid business results while minimizing their environmental impact. The focus of the rankings is how efficiently businesses manage their resources.

Mohawk ranked 314 in “Green Rankings 2012,” which was the last year Newsweek complied the list. This year Mohawk’s ranking is 241, which is the highest it has been since 2010. Newsweek and Corporate Knights Capital revised the metrics used to calculate the 2014 rankings. The new revision makes the comparisons between manufacturing companies, financial services, technology, and other sectors more equitable.

Mohawk promotes a “no waste culture.” Seventeen North American facilities do not send no process waste to landfills. Mohawk plans to increase that number to twenty-eight by the end of this year. In addition, the company has created goals to reduce waste, lower water, energy, and greenhouse gas (GHG) intensity. Mohawk has reduced energy and greenhouse gas intensities by focusing on reductions, improving efficiencies, and utilizing cleaner fuels.

Mohawk’s Scotchgard Protector Advanced Repel Technology

pig penAt Carpet Express, when you enter our Market Street store, you will see a fun display for Mohawk’s Scotchgard Protector Advanced Repel Technology, which provides complete protection for your flooring. It is fun and ironic that Mohawk uses “Pig-Pen” from the Peanuts comic strip by Charles M. Schulz as the display. “Pig-Pen” attracts dirt, and he attracts dirt so much that when he is actually clean no one recognizes him.
If Scotchgard Protector can repel “Pig-Pen’s” mess then you have nothing to worry about in regards to every day messes. Scotchgard Protector Advanced Repel Technology protects hardwood floors from stains and spills, and it also reduces abrasive wear and soil buildup. Every carpet fiber and the carpet backing is also safe from stain and soil. Mohawk hardwood flooring, Wear-Dated carpet, EverStrand Carpet, and PermaStrand Carpet have the Scotchgard Protector Advanced Repel Technology.
