13 Ways to Keep your Flooring Clean this Summer

Just like your mom said “Take off your muddy or wet shoes before entering the house!” We also suggest making a habit of taking off your shoes when you get home. Its good for your floor and your health. Mom was right! But there are other things you can do to keep you floor clean, beautiful, safe, and clean!

Sweep daily for hard surface floors to remove dust and pet hair. Daily sweep keeps hair and dust from wearing the surface of all floors. Use a damp mop to clean up any dirt that the broom did not get.

Vacuum every few days for carpet. When vacuuming vinyl, do not use a “beater bar” attachment; this can damage the flooring surface.

Place area mats at all of the entrances to the home. Make sure the mats have a rubber backing so no moisture will soak through the mat to the floor.

Clean up any spills immediately!

If there are any tough spots on your laminate flooring, which can be caused by oil, paint, markers, ink, or etc., then you can use acetone/nail polish remover on a white cloth to clean the spot.

If you get mud on the carpet, allow the mud to dry completely. After it has dried, shatter the mud with the handle of a knife, then vacuum as normal.

Sand can cause your tile flooring to become dull looking if it is not cleaned off regularly. Clean tile with a mild detergent and clean water with a rag or chamois-type mop rather than a sponge mop.

Be sure to clean up any water off your tile flooring so you will not have anyone slipping or falling in the house after being in the pool.

After swimming in the pool or playing in the water fountain, be sure to dry off completely or as much as you can before entering the house so you do not get water on the floor. Water is not your floors’ friend; no matter what kind it is!

World Environment Day!

world environment dayTaking care of the environment is one of the most important things we can do, and many of our carpet and hardwood manufacturers create environmentally friendly flooring. Shaw, Mohawk, Armstrong, and IndusParquet are just a few of the manufacturers who create products that help the environment.
Shaw Industries has many environmentally friendly products, which are Cradle to Cradle certified. Cradle to Cradle focuses on designing so that waste is never an option. Cradle to Cradle creates products that will be deconstructed and recycled back into their original materials over and over again. Here are some of Shaw’s Cradle to Cradle certified products: Anso Type 6 Nylon fiber, Eco Solution Type 6 nylon fiber, EcoWorx carpet tile backing, EcoWorx Broadloom, EcoWorx Performance Broadloom backing, Zeftron Nylon fiber, and Epic hardwood. cradle to cradle

Anso nylon carpets are some of Shaw’s most popular green products. All of the carpets and area rugs made from Anso nylon can be recycled at Shaw’s Evergreen Nylon Recycling facility. Evergreen enables Shaw to recycle post-consumer carpet back into new carpet over and over again.

Armstrong is another manufacturer who helps out the environment by practicing sustainable forest management. They also help reduce the impact of logging practices. The majority of wood that Armstrong uses in their domestic hardwood flooring is sourced from the Appalachian hardwood region, where the growth rate is an average 2+ trees for every tree harvested. Also, their engineered hardwood flooring is certified as a low-emitting (low VOC) wood product.

IndusParquet is another hardwood manufacturer that focuses on helping the environment. IndusParquet operates in compliance of government regulations, assuring that the natural resources used in the production of IndusParquet products are manufactured efficiently with minimum impact on the environment. The timber harvest in Brazil is strictly controlled by the government, and the harvest is limited to a maximum of eight trees per 3/4 acre. Endangered trees and trees that provide food for animals are preserved. They are not allowed to be harvested. Also, every tree that is harvested is tagged with an ID code that stays with the tree throughout the manufacturing process.
In addition, IndusParquet has adopted a zero waste policy. 100% of all the wood that enters the factory is used. IndusParquet also owns three vast reforestation plantations to help assure a sustainable resource. Make sure to look for the “Made in Brazil” mark for exotic wood flooring made to protect and preserve the environment.

The hardwood used for the actual lane is cabin grade quality and in the color natural. We keep stock in the cabin grade quality of this hardwood, but we also have the first quality on our website.

Preparing Your Home for New Carpet

2

The first step to prepare your home for a new carpet, is to have a professional come out to your home and measure the area where the carpet will go. It’s a good idea to get an idea of an estimate when you first go in looking for a carpet, so you can get an idea of how much the carpet will cost, but you should have a professional get exact measurements for you before you actually order any carpet.
The next step to consider when getting new carpet, is to have an idea of what your budget will be. After you have an exact measurement, be sure to get a quote that has the exact cost of the carpet, carpet padding, and the installation labor.
The third step is to make a plan for the installation. You will need to schedule with your installer an exact day or a few days for the actual installation job at your home or business. You will need to make sure you have a plan about where the furniture will go and where the new carpet and pad will go. If you have any other questions or concerns, be sure to discuss those with the installer before the installation day arrives.
The next step is to clean and prepare the rooms that will have the new carpet installed in them. You will need to make sure that you either have the installers move the furniture, you remove the furniture from the area, or have a moving company just move the furniture for you. After the furniture is out of the way, just make sure that you don’t have anything else in the room that shouldn’t be in there during the installation.
The last step is to decide what you want to do with your old carpet and pad. If you do not want to keep your old carpet and pad, then you will need to check with your installer about removing the old carpet and pad and getting rid of it. If possible, it is always best to have your carpet and pad taken somewhere it can be recycled. Most installers will take the old carpet and pad as part of the installation cost, but some installers might have an additional cost for the removal. You can always check on this detail before you even place an order for the carpet and set a date for the installation.

It’s always a great feeling to have new carpet and pad installed in your home, and we have many great carpets to choose from. Make sure you plan everything out before you purchase a carpet and padding for your home.
