Color of the Year 2015: Marsala

color of the year (use this one)

Marsala has been named the color of the year for 2015 by Pantone. Marsala is a naturally robust and earthy wine red. This color is said to enrich our minds, bodies, and souls. Marsala is a gorgeous color, which goes great with so many other colors. It will be used in fashion, beauty products, industrial design, home furnishings, and interiors all over the world next year.

Marsala is an elegant, grounded statement color that will look amazing in a home as room accents, area rugs, or even upholstery. Many area rug companies have already started creating many area rugs featuring Marsala as the main color or as the accent color. Marsala is also great for kitchens because of the warm color. You could pick a Marsala colored tile to use as the counter-top in the kitchen.
Marsala is a dramatic and grounding color at the same time, which makes it perfect to bring warmth and a pop of color to a home without being overbearing. Since Marsala is such a grounding color, you can even use this color for your floor as a carpet.
If you don’t want a Marsala colored carpet, then you can always use a light grey, a tan, a light blue, or a peach color. Marsala is a versatile color because of how earthy it is. It goes well with a lot of other earthy colors.

Decorating with Pumpkin

blog pumpkin 3Fall is full of gorgeous and rich colors, but one of the most popular colors is pumpkin orange. The color pumpkin can be used as more than just real pumpkins in your home or fall leaf decor. Orange is a warm color and it is a great way to add warmth and energy to a room. Adding orange to a room can create feelings of happiness. Don’t add too much orange to a room because it can be overwhelming in large quantities, but with the right amount and right balance, orange can be a wonderful color to have in your home for the Fall season and even year round.
Carpet is a great way to use orange in a room. If the orange color you choose is very bold, then make sure the rest of the room is full of neutral colors so it balances. Be brave and go bold if you want to use a pumpkin orange as the color of your flooring. There are many beautiful neutral pieces of furniture and other accents for a room, so you can still have a gorgeous room with pumpkin colored flooring.

If you don’t want to use this color as your flooring, then you could paint one accent wall this color or just buy furniture or decorations in this color. Lamps, trays, throw pillows, or even little stools or ottomans are great ways to bring this color into a room without using too much. Also, area rugs are another great way to add orange to a room.

Creating an Eclectic Interior Design

eclectic 1 revised 2

Eclectic interior design may seem like a chaotic mix of random furniture and decor. However, an eclectic design means that you have brought different styles and decor together in a way that makes sense to the eyes. An eclectic design is fun and unique, but you have to follow a few design tips to get the design to work.
Here are seven simple rules that will help you create an Eclectic style in your home:

1. Limit the amount of design styles you mix in the room – Try to only use three or less styles so your room won’t look too busy.

2. Limit the amount of colors used in the room – You should pick one color as a primary, which will be used for large areas such as the walls and floor. I would pick a neutral or dark muted color for the primary color. The second color chosen should be used for sofas, area rugs, and furniture. After those colors, you can use 2 to 3 little bright accent colors for throw pillows, art, or lamps.
Here is a great idea for the flooring – wood revised

3. Use colors and textures to unite objects from different styles and time periods.

4. Use layers – Put large objects at the back and put smaller objects in front on a dresser or table. Layering like this will give the room depth and interest.

5. Use wall art
eclectic 2 revised 3
6. Don’t be scared to experiment!

7. Don’t be scared of abundance – Eclectic style is famous for using many decorative objects, which make interiors look boho and cozy. Be creative in the room and use your own DIY projects, souvenirs from vacations, pieces of artwork, tribal cushions, and oriental rugs.

Area Rugs for Children

Area rugs are not just for adults. There are so many fun and creative area rugs that work perfectly in children’s bedrooms and playrooms. Kids have such a huge imagination that where you might see an area rug, they see an entire new world in their room. Area rugs with cities printed on them or cute landscapes are popular with younger children because they can go on little adventures in a setting that only exists in their minds. An area rug with a race track printed on it will amuse any kid with a toy car for at least an hour.  Even LIL MO WHIMSY LMJ12 - TOWNarea rugs with space scenes on them will make a kid feel like they are an astronaut. Area rugs are gorgeous but they can also provide great fun and entertainment to a child because of their expansive imagination.
At the beginning of every school year, school teachers always enter the store looking for great area rugs for their classroom. Some just want an area rug to add a pop of color or design to the room, but many teachers use the area rugs as a part of their classroom management. Many elementary school teachers use area rugs in their classroom to designate a specific area of the room for a learning task. For example, I know a lot of teachers who use area rugs to create a reading area in the classroom or a group activity area. Children enjoy leaving their desks to go sit in a circle to hear a story or to pass around a book and take turns reading. Just having somewhere in the room to sit and learn beside a desk, makes learning more enjoyable.
Area rugs are wonderful to have to help bring a design to life in the home, but they are even better when put in a child’s room or classroom. An area rug becomes more than just a piece of decor, it becomes a creative outlet and learning zone for children.

River Rock Flooring

River rocks are smooth and round because of the natural erosion, which occurs because of the water rushing past the rocks. These beautiful stones can do more than just sit in a river and have fish swim by them. You can take these rocks and create a gorgeous flooring in your bathroom, your kitchen, or even on your walls. An easy way to use small river rocks is to mount them on flexible webbed sheets, which will make it easier to install the rocks as tiles that have even grout lines. If you prefer larger stones, then you can individually install and grout the stones. The river rocks use the same installation materials as manufactured tile. The adhesive is a thin-set mortar, and tile grout or mortar is used in the grout joints. If you seal the stones before grouping the clean up process is easier. A proper underlay for this type of flooring is concrete backer board, but if you only use river rock flooring in small areas then you don’t need it.
You can use river rocks as an accent in the bathroom. The river rock can be formed into a small rug in front of the shower or bathroom sink, which will blend in well with the other flooring in the bathroom. If you use river rock tiles as your shower flooring, then try to pick stones that are really smooth so cleaning is easier. Also, try to buy stones with a shine to them so they stand out better in the shower.
If you are tiling the entire floor, you will make the room cooler so you might want to buy a few thick scatter rugs. The scatter rugs will add some warmth and cushion to the room. Large rooms can use small or large river rocks well as the flooring, but small bathrooms look better with smaller rocks. River rocks come in all shapes, sizes, and colors so be creative! You can mix any of the rocks together or you could cover the floor with one type of rock and use another one as an accent. If you tile the bathroom floor and shower then use a larger stone for the bathroom and a smaller stone for the shower.

Deciding on What Flooring Look Suits Your Home

l 1Any interior designer will tell you to design a room starting with the floor and then the walls. However, before you pick a style of flooring, you need to evaluate what you want and what you need. After you have figured out those two things, you can then focus on the look of the flooring.

The first step is to decide what type of flooring will work best in your home. Carpet will give your home a warmer and comfortable look, and vinyl will add a great flooring visual at a cheaper price than hardwood or tile. Also, hardwood works great with pets and children, and it adds a good resale value on your home. You do not have to stick to only one type of flooring. Pick what will work best for your needs.

The next decision to make is if you want the flooring to be a focal point of the room or if it should be a compliment to the rest of the room. After choosing the floor’s priority in the design of the room, you need to pick the color that works best. Neutral will always work well, especially if you decide to sell your home, but you should go with the color you want. You need to choose what will make you happy in the long run. Make sure to choose a dominant color and two complimentary colors for the room. Usually the floor will have the dominant color.

The last decision to make is about the style of the flooring. If you choose carpet or vinyl, then your choices are easier. However, if you choose tile or hardwood, then you have more design styles to choose from. If you choose to be more conservative with the flooring, then you can always add an area rug to liven up the room.
